Me & the Hip-Hop Hustler

My Kauai trip 2001

My Kauai trip 2001

I was running errands with PK today when I was stopped by a couple of local up and coming artists who were selling their cd. I’m all about the arts but I declined. One gentleman wrote down his Youtube and Facebook info.  I was very impressed with the way the men presented themselves. As I was leaving one said that he hoped I enjoyed his music and poetry. Based on that alone, I expected his music to be something new, inspirational and intelligent.

Let’s pause here for a moment before going into the actual music. Personally I listen to all kinds of music; classical, international pop, alternative, hip hop, rap, etc (to the nth power) aaaaaannnd…5 country songs. As a music lover, I know that some of the most ignorant music in the world is on America’s hip hop stations. Honestly, the only reason I put up with some of it is-to quote Betty Wright’s Tonight is the Night-,  ”..I like the music, the melody it’s really nice…” and I can workout to it! But some lyrics? I mean, I know ten-year-olds with more creative talent than some of these micro-phoned morons. Jeez, I’d have to start getting high just to tolerate it!

Back to the story-After meeting these artists I thought maybe someone in this hip hop /rap game has grown tired of the same ol, same ol, and is going to share something newBut of course I was wrong. It was the same old, drugs, drinking, hustling and hoes and if the lyrics were not cliche enough, any hope for the melody was killed off by the recycled lyrics.

That’s real s***?

Yes it is. Another black man pushing along a worn out stereotype. Don’t believe me? Watch The Birth of a Nation (1915). So, the world community thanks you for doing your social duty and further sedating people in a purple haze of propaganda.

Come on! Isn’t there more to you and your life? There has to be. Did you go to school? Do you have a family? Ever been in love?  jail, arrested, racially profiled? What do you think of the current politics? What lessons have you learned in life  that you can pass on, what is your unique message?  What’s nice about being an independent artist is that you have the creative freedom to tell your own story!  I’m not one to go searching through Youtube for new artists.  I am lazy/busy that way so I prefer to stumble upon them-always hoping for something a bit different.

Most surprising was how mismatched these men were to their merchandise; no sag in their jeans, clean shaven, neatly dressed. Then again, maybe I’m not their target audience…after all they were hustling in front of a liquor store, probably taking advantage of the fact that pot heads and drunks can’t quite tell the difference between art and their own assholes. Oh well.

No TV for Me

Coyote Hills

About one month ago I paid my cable bill-then called to cancel our service.

CSR: Is there anything we can do to keep you as a customer?

Me: Not unless you can raise my son’s g.p.a

CSR: I guess not then.

I was able to pick my cancellation date so I let my final payment ride and our service ended the same day the kids returned to school; after spring break .

For the first few days I was kind of nervous. I mean four kids and no cable?!! The first thing I noticed was things got done; laundry and chores were not put on hold until a commercial break or worse till the end of a show. I didn’t have leave my room in the middle of the night to make sure the TV was off, or find it blasting the news in the morning. I had no reason to leave the kitchen during meals to watch a rerun of “Two and a Half Men” or “Big Bang Theory” (I will really miss BBT). Before, even when I turned it off someone (or a few someone’s) would turn it back on!  I didn’t realize how much of a distraction it was until it was gone. It was this constant noise in the background of our lives. The competition between me and it is over and I won!

Yesterday I spent time outside with my children and the neighborhood kids playing “red light, green light” and “Simon says”. Not that I didn’t do it before, I just had that extra time to do it. I used to rush to put the kids to bed so I could watch my shows in peace; that stress is gone. The studying while watching GH also not a factor. Today, I took my kids on a hike (or run wild) and I don’t know how long its been since we’ve done it (close to a year probably) but we were all out of shape. Despite my body-rocking and elliptical work, hiking is a whole different kind of workout. When we left the hills we planned to do it again this weekend.

When we are home, the boys are the only ones who miss the TV but I think they will get over it. They can still watch movies after they finish their homework and chores. I plan on using the old TV time for family board games-they were all playing cards together earlier. Overall I love not having that constant noisy interference in our lives.  Honestly, I wish I had done it sooner.

Entering Again…

Last year I entered two poems along with two pieces digital art in a fine arts contest.  Last year, one of my pieces which included my poem “Rage” was purchased. The other won, “Honorable Mention” and is hanging on my bedroom wall. As for last years poems  ”Western Woman/Eastern Expectations” won 3rd prize. The other poem entered titled “Fencing with Love” did not win anything. Both are related to love; not wanting, having or being able to keep it and both were published and are available here Carry the Light Amazon.com

I was going to skip the contest this year but then a huge booklet (advertising this years contests, events and rules) arrived.  Once I opened it, I wanted to enter. This time I’m entering an ekphrasis poem titled, “Sanctuary of Sickness” inspired by the painting  below.

The Tower At Stony Wood by Kinuko Y.Craft

My other entry is a short story titled Dusk. Yes, I finally wrote something under 1K!. The entire story is recalled dream; nightmare actually. Both are dark, but hopefully the judges won’t hold that against me.

Back to ekphrasis for a moment. Have you created a poem, song, story, or piece of art inspired by a different specific type of art? If not why not give it a try?

Supreme Court and the Gay Marriage Debate

http://blogs-images.forbes.com/stephenricher/files/2012/10/Supreme-Court.jpg

The Supreme Court

In America, on this day (at least the day I”m drafting this) the Supreme Court has been asked to rule over same-sex marriage. I thought to myself, In 20 years marriage will be legal to all so why not just do it now.I’m an author not a lawyer so don’t call me up to debate the issues, I understand the legalities and the religious side of it but realistically, (taking into account societal expectations)I am the last person who should be offering an opinion on marriage gay or otherwise.  But I will say this! I have many characters in my head and some of them are gay. Of those, some are married, and those who are married will stay that way regardless of how the Supreme Court rules!

Life, Leisure and Writing

Sometimes I feel like Francis Brunn. I’m juggling so much that people say things to me like, “I can’t imagine” and “I don’t know how you do it.” My reply is, “Honestly neither do I”. I’m not going to bog anyone down with what’s keeping me so busy, you have your own life to juggle. What I am going do is bring up something that came up in my recent Women and Leisure course.

I was asked to make a specific list of 3 things I can do to reach my writing goals.

Here are my answers:

1) Most obvious was to drop out of school-Family members have already suggested it. Why? I am literally getting sick every two weeks and these are not little colds either. It is the stress that comes from putting off my existing already full domestic/family/job/related responsibilities in order keep up with the coursework. Not to mention, there is no time for leisure, no time to unwind and more to the point,  no time for writing.  I am far to busy chasing my own educational tail to enjoy that peace that comes with writing. Eventually I land in bed with a fever and body aches. Not fun.

After that I froze. Realistically, I can’t drop out. So I had to dig deeper to find out what else is robbing me of my writing time?

2) Social Media. Like money, time lost  can add up to time wasted.  Sure it’s ten minutes here, 20 minutes there, but it really does add up. So I’ve already ordered to have our cable service cut off and after finals I am blocking my computer from accessing all social websites so I can focus on writing. After all I did announce a book release this Spring.

The third thing was easy to admit, but hard to do.

3) Spend less time socializing with people who are not encouraging/supportive of my goals-even if they are family- and to spend more time with people who are. To clarify, I’m not one of those who needs a cheering section but I also don’t need to spend (potential writing) time with people who try to force me into a boxed up version of what they think I am and should be. Instead I need to focus on meeting with my local writers clubs and online writing groups.

Now it’s your turn-

What 3 specific things can you do today in order to reach your writing goals?

Then list 3 local resources and 3 web resources that you can utilize to help achieve your goals.

Post your (full) responses below through March 31st and get a coupon for a free download of, “Anna, Wake Up” through Smashwords.com

Preparing for a Big Springtime Reveal!

DelValle, CA

Del Valle Regional Park

Springtime is for new beginnings and after surviving the Apocalypse of 2012, I can think of no better time to release my debut novel. While nature prepares for her big reveal, so must I. My editor and I have entered that critical process of cutting out the unnecessary and highlighting all the rest, ensuring an enjoyable and unforgettable story.

While you wait, here are some things to know about the book:

  1. It is contemporary fiction
  2. There are no supernatural creatures
  3. It is the perfect escape from your own reality!

It won’t be long now!

New year, new website…

Please forgive the nakedness….currently relocating and re-organizing.

Thanks so much for your continued patience.
